Its time for my second clinical placement and I am more anxious than I was last year as I am going to be placed at Kaleeya Hospital whereas last year I was at a private practice. It will be interesting to see how physiotherapy is run in a hospital setting as this is new to me. I expect this placement to be educational as well as reinforce my prior knowledge of geriatrics.
I am hopeful that as a third year, I will able to be more interactive and hands on with the patients, which will allow me to strengthen my communication skills, professionalism and technical skills. I am hoping that I will be seeing some of the same patients throughout my placement, which will allow me to see potential growth and recovery, allowing my placement to become a more rewarding experience.
I am doing 8:00am to 4:30pm, which I am very happy about, as my hours on my last placement were longer. As a third year physiotherapy student, I expect to either be watching the superior physiotherapist with hands on experience or, if I am lucky, I may be given my own patients.
My placement last year was not as fulfilling as I expected as I didn’t really get much hands on experience, which was disappointing. Thus, I am a bit concerned that the level of expectation required of me at Kaleeya Hospital as a third year physiotherapy student may be greater than my abilities at this stage. I still feel like a second year going into a third year placement which may reflect during the initial weeks. However, I am positive and I am a fast learner so I will be able to adjust to the expectations and provide physiotherapy to the best of my abilities.
Overall, I’m excited to be in a hospital setting and am hoping for a rewarding, challenging and educational second placement.
